Facing a death in the family is hard enough, but when your home becomes a crime scene because of that death, it can quickly become overwhelming – especially where suicide is involved. If you or a loved one is facing a suicide crime scene, here are some simple tips for handling the situation.

Report to Police

The first thing that you should do is report the death to the police. Suicide, unattended death, crime-relation death, and any other type of death should be reported and investigated appropriately.

Unfortunately, this does mean that you have to open your home to the various crews that will come in. Just know that they are there to help you and support you. They know that you are facing a tragedy. They also know that they are invading your home when you are really in no state of mind to have company.

Rely on the police and other servicing companies to do their jobs.

Stay Elsewhere

The most comfortable place to be is most likely your home. However, when it is a suicide crime scene, you will probably need to get away for a few nights. Cleanup may take some time and you will rest much better somewhere outside of the home until those details are handled.

If you have a loved one you can stay with, that is the best choice. They can offer you support while you are hurting. If all else fails, consider a hotel room until cleanup is complete.

Bring in Professional Cleanup

In the case of any type of scene like this, you are most likely facing things like blood and bodily fluids. There may be odors to contend with as well.

While you can DIY clean certain things, it is very hard to do so effectively. The best thing to do is to bring in a professional cleanup team to help you out. These teams are trained to clean the area safely and effectively. They can eliminate the mess as well as the odors that might be present.

They can also handle the area safely.

The last thing you want to do is clean up the scene when you’re grieving for the loss. That’s where we come in.

Find Counseling and Support

Regardless of the situation, you will most likely grieve for some time after a loss like this. We highly recommend connecting with the resources that are available for you. There are support groups for victims and survivors of both crime and suicide. There are also various counseling services to help you work through your grief.

The healing process can take time. Having support, compassion, and encouragement will be very beneficial to you as you work through that process. Don’t put your emotional and mental health on the back burner.
